Megasquirt 3 can be purchased in a number of varieties depending on end user skill level. It is important that you assess your skill level.
To get the most from any engine management system you DO need to learn about tuning and how engines are setup and work, or pay your tuner to do it.
Your supplier should be able to help you in this important purchasing decision.
| End user skill level | Offering | Installed by | Tuned by | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Assembled unit | Professional installer | Professional tuner | High |
| High | Assembled unit | Self install | Self tune | Low |
| Highest | Self assembled DIY unit | Self install | Self tune | Lowest |
All suppliers should be offering a fully assembled Megasquirt 3 package (MS3 + MS3X + V3.57) which comes as a complete cased ECU ready to connect.
Contact your supplier to see what looms or loom pigtails they can offer.
For those looking to minimise cost or who are more electronically minded, you can buy self assemble kits and actually solder it all together yourself.
Megasquirt 3 DOES REQUIRE TUNING! The log analyser and tuning software can be used to assist the process, but as shipped the Megasquirt is not self tuning. To successfully install and tune the ECU you will need to understand engine operation and fuel injection methods. The more you understand the better your installation. The documentation provided should guide you through this process as well as giving you the opportunity to learn some of the underlying theory.
Plug and play variants are likely in the future, but as with all universal engine management systems, it is the responsibility of the installer and tuner to configure the system correctly.
